Each year we empower over 150 students to discover and harness the power of their dreams through a unique curriculum that is built upon the principles of Positive Youth Development, which emphasizes focusing on youths’ strengths to build the skills necessary for their future success.  DREAM instructors use this practice to engage students with dance in order to foster teamwork, community engagement and instill confidence in their ability to succeed. Click here for a complete list of DREAM schools.

Students in the DREAM program participate in the following activities:

Kick Off Performance

CityDance’s kicks off the DREAM program with a free in-school performance that is open to the community. The performance is used to promote and encourage registration for the after-school program.

The After-School Program

Over the 32-week program, students discover that much like writing an essay or painting a picture that dance can also be used to communicate a message. Through journaling and discussions, students collectively identify a concern in their community and choreograph a dance and develop a service project to address that concern.

Field Trips

DC Council Youth Hearing: Students visit and testify before the DC Council at a Youth Hearing to voice their community concerns and to experience how civic engagement can be used to create change.

All-School Rehearsals: During three rehearsals with 150+ of their peers from across the DC metropolitan area, students learn the value of teamwork and the importance of bridging their differences in order to achieve a common goal.

Student Performances:

Performance at a Washington Wizards Half Time at the Verizon Center:
Students experience the thrill of success that comes from working collaboratively with 150+ of their peers to perform for the more than 20,000 people attending a Wizards Basketball game.

All-School Annual Performance:
Students showcase their skills through original choreography and showcase their community service efforts through a “Service Fair,” in the theater lobby.

Culminating Community Performance:
Each school hosts its own year-end performance. Students produce the show on their own, using their original choreography to draw attention to their community goal. During the 2012-2013 school year students performed at a nursing home, other schools, at special events at their schools, and as part of local community days.
