SongwritersThe Songwriters
A co-presentation by Strathmore and CityDance

Friday, June 13, 2008
8pm
Concert Hall
Music Center at Strathmore
5301 Tuckerman Lane
North Bethesda, MD

An evening of dance centered around America’s great songwriters, including Sophie Maslow’s Folksay* inspired by the music of Woody Guthrie; Jane Dudley’s Harmonica Breakdown set to the music of Sonny Terry; and Paul Gordon Emerson’s Born to Run performed to the iconic songs of Bruce Springsteen.

Completing the program is ODC/San Francisco Artistic Director Brenda Way's On a Train Heading South, a vigorous piece that bravely tackles global warming.

NEW! Just added to the program is a new dance featuring live musical accompaniment by the celebrated and enormosly talented harmonicist Frederic Yonnet and pianist Vince Evans. With choreography by Paul Gordon Emerson and dancers Bruno Augusto and Kathryn Pilkington, this dance and music collaboration is not to be missed.

LEARN MORE! Join us for a dance panel before the performance.

"The Future of the Past: Reflections on the restoration of classic modern dances" • Hosted by Paul Gordon Emerson
Panel consists of Abby Blatt (choreographer Sophie Maslow's daughter), Lynn Frielinghaus (artistic coach for Sophie Maslow's Folksay), Dawn Lille (dance faculty at Juilliard specializing in dance history)

* CityDance is a recipient of American Masterpieces: Dance grant, the dance component of a major initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts administered by New England Foundation for the Arts, for the reconstruction of Sophie Maslow's 1942 work Folksay. This concert marks CityDance's premiere performance of this 26-minute piece featuring eight dancers and two musicians who play traditional folk songs and recite Carl Sandburg's poem The People, Yes.
